The WBCS exam is conducted every year by the State PSC of West Bengal to recruit top grade executive officers mostly of the gazetted rank. Obviously the battle, i.e., the competition is also of the highest level and is not a cup of tea for everyone. To win a battle, it is important to be well equipped, but what is more important is one's strategy and perseverance.
The preliminary exams of the WBCS cover eight subjects with 200 marks in aggregate, while the main exams cover six subjects with 1200 marks (Group C & D) and seven subjects consist of total 1600 marks (Group A & B). It is not wise, as most of the students do, to prepare for the prelims first and leave the mains for future, thinking, "What, if I cannot clear the prelims even?" No, this is a blunder which reflects your lack of confidence. Always prepare for the mains, keeping an eye on the prelims because most of the subjects are common.
Since most of the subjects are knowledge oriented and not calculative, the time management is not a big problem. But be careful as there is negative marking also in both the exams. Wild guessing will take you now here but guessing prudently will of course give you some dividend. In short, cracking the WBCS exam is not at all a big deal if you keep the following points in mind -

  • Yes, I can be confident
  • Never give up till success
  • Study in depth, but to-the-point
  • Assess yourself regularly through Mock Tests
